Hi I'm Aly Silverio and I'm the founder of Jawbreaking. I started my business at the age of 15 during the summer of '08. Rebelling against the idea of looking for a "real" first job, I decided to start making jewelry as a means to make some extra money. It all started with my stepsister getting me pop tart earrings that were made of polymer clay, so I decided to experiment with the clay myself. It began with my tiny bedroom floor and a beat up toaster oven from a thrift store. Through trial and error and feedback from my friends, my designs and techniques improved. With limited funds, I utilized the power of social networking to promote Jawbreaking. Back then, I literally had no idea what I was doing with my life. I wasn't thinking about a career or college or anything, that summer changed my life because it was then that I found something I loved doing. It was meant to be more than just a side project to make money. I wanted Jawbreaking to be big.
I continued to work on my designs while in school and the orders kept coming. By the time I graduated high school, Jawbreaking had expanded to graphic tshirts and I was able to vend the Vans Warped Tour straight out of high school. The months following the tour were spent spreading the word even more via social networking and word of mouth.
Today, Jawbreaking is known as an independent clothing company designed for the big dreamers, headbangers, lovers, and wanderers. I always get asked where I get my inspiration from and I just answer with "LIFE." That's what Jawbreaking is - my life in designs. If there's anything I've learned, it's that you can't quit just because you or someone else thinks you can't do it. You'll never know if you don't try. Like, let's be real… If you would have told me two or three years ago that my own clothing brand would be sold in stores across the US, worn by the world's biggest boy band (Hey, One Direction, you're awesome) (Still waiting on ya, Harry), or that I would have this crazy internet following, I would have thought you were insane. It sounds cliché, but I mean, how could I have known any of this was gonna happen? It just proves that anything is possible.
